EDP PROGRAMMES

Water Resilience

Resilient water systems are crucial for sustainable livelihoods and economic growth. Climate change, environmental factors and population growth are all placing demands on South Africa’s scarce water resources and institutional challenges prevent effective coordination and undermine infrastructure maintenance. The EDP strengthens relationships among water users and custodians to improve water governance for water resilience.

Examples of our work:
Collaborating to ensure Western Cape Water Supply System resilience

This project supports the City of Cape Town and the actors within the Western Cape water supply system to strengthen water security through improved operations, management and institutional collaboration. By facilitating stakeholder dialogues, capacity building and joint decision-making, this project builds institutional trust and resilience against climate change, drought and other system shocks.

Developing an area-based catchment management strategy

The EDP is supporting BOCMA to develop a new Catchment Management Strategy for the expanded Breede-Olifants Water Management Area. This process strengthens institutional capacity, embeds participatory governance, integrates nature-based and built solutions, and addresses water security challenges from climate change, ecological degradation, and increasing demand. Partners include Pegasys, Zutari, Southern Waters, Geoss, and L2K2.
